Worship Updates

Sunday, August 14, 9AM On this second Sunday of August we have the joy to welcome guest speaker, Mike Velez, Lay Speaker from Cortland UMC whose members we now welcome as part of First UMC. It’s Back to School Sunday! We will include a “Blessing of the Backpacks” for students returning to school starting this week, so bring your bags with you to worship.

Next Sunday, August 21, 9AM “Call Signs” – Jeremiah 4:1-10. Pastor Jon returns to remind us of our prophetic calling: to be just what God created us to be. We also celebrate a joyful baptism on this Sunday! Please join us.

Miscellaneous Updates

Church Office hours are Monday through Friday 9 am until 4 pm. Bookkeeper’s hours (subject to change): Tuesdays 1 to 2 pm, Wednesdays 5:30 to 8:30 pm.

STAYING CONNECTED We continue to pray for each other and to reach out with phone calls and cards. The First UMC prayer chain ministry is still very active. If you have a prayer need, please contact Linda Buhr ( and she will pass the prayer request along to the prayer warriors

Call for Charge Conference A Charge Conference will be held on Sunday, August 21, at 10:15 am, following Sunday morning worship, in the Church Sanctuary. This conference will vote to authorize our Board of Trustees to negotiate and complete the selling of our current church buildings and parking lot.

The resolution:

Be it resolved … We, the members of the First United Methodist Church of DeKalb, empower the Board of Trustees to negotiate and complete the selling of the church properties at Fourth and Oak Streets in DeKalb, Illinois.

The church properties currently comprise three buildings and a parking lot:

  • Sanctuary, 321 Oak Street
  • Education (North) Wing, 317 North 4th Street
  • Annex (parsonage), 311 North 4th Street
  • Parking lot, at the northeast corner of Oak Street and North 4th Street

Proceeds from the sale of our property are intended to be applied to the construction of our new church at 2501 North Annie Glidden in DeKalb.

While everyone is invited, please note that only professing members are eligible to cast a ballot for or against this resolution. If you are unsure of your membership status, check with the Church office by Thursday, August 18. Members eligible to vote must be present to cast a ballot. No proxy or absentee voting is allowed.

Jr & Sr High Youth Group Tubing Adventure is Saturday, August 20, at S & B Tubing in Albany, WI. Cost is $20 a person (cash only) – the church will cover $10 for each youth group member. Families are welcome to join. We will meet at the church at 10:45 am and return between 6 and 7 pm. Bring snacks or a lunch and a water bottle. We will rent a few tube to hold coolers. Wear your swimsuit under your clothes. Bring sunscreen, towel and change of clothes for the ride home. RSVP to Sherry Uhrich at

In-person: Offerings will be received as you enter and/or exit the sanctuary.

Use our eGiving platform (a link can also be found on our church website – bottom of any page) to make electronic gifts. Here’s a video tutorial to learn how to give online.

Mail checks to the church at 317 N. 4th St., DeKalb, IL 60115. (Please do not mail cash.)

Donate on Facebook. Click the “Donate” button on our cover photo. All contributions made through Facebook are applied to the general fund giving. Designations cannot be made to specific funds.

Below are some of the ministries and missions you can choose on our eGiving site (please indicate which area you wish your check to support if mailing in your gift). You do not need to set up an account with eGiving, you are welcome to give as a ‘guest’.

GENERAL FUND Gifts to the general fund cover basic costs of doing ministry. Although we are not present in worship together, we still need to receive your offerings to meet basic needs like paying the electric bill so we can continue to live stream. This is also the fund to select for your annual pledged giving.

BUILDING FUND You are invited to partner with us to “Help Build The Future” as we continue the fund raising effort for construction of our new building.

SPARE CHANGE MINISTRY The emphasis for the third quarter is on doing rather than giving. Should any loose coins be received in the offering plate throughout July, August and September they will be placed in the Missions Ministry fund for use as needs arise. Watch the Messenger newsletter for upcoming Spare Change recipients. If giving by check or paper bills, or if you wish your coin contribution to appear on your quarterly contribution report indicate “Spare Change” on your check or offering envelope. Foreign currency cannot be accepted.
