Worship Updates

Sunday, February 28, “The Importance of Listening: Study” Last Sunday we talked about the power of Worship and Prayer — praising God and connecting with the One who made us. This Sunday we focus on the importance of listening for God’s guidance and calling through reading and studying the Scriptures. We will be challenged to develop a daily practice of Bible reading, starting with a goal of reading at least 5 verses.  What does God want to say to you today?

Two Options for Worship: In-Person and Livestream Online IN-PERSON WORSHIP: 9:00 AM Join us in the Church Sanctuary for a modified worship experience at 9AM this Sunday. Please review the many precautions we are taking to minimize the risks in gathering together. MASK wearing is required. Keep physically distanced from others not living with you. Hand sanitizer is available at each entrance. Here’s a link to a video the Melms family prepared for us that shows some of what to expect when we come together for worship: Worship Do’s and Don’ts. RESERVATIONS required to attend: Go to http://firstumc.net/reservations/ to sign up for your spot. To watch a tutorial on how the online reservation system works, follow this link: Reservation Tutorial. ONLINE WORSHIP: 9:00 AM – Our online worship Our online worship will be available as a livestream from the Church on our DeKalb First UMC Facebook page (https://www.facebook.com/firstumcdekalbillinois) each Sunday at 9:00 AM. You will be able to see and hear what those attending in person experience. After the Worship is finished, a video of the service will be available on Facebook so you can watch later in the day or any time throughout the week if you miss Sunday morning. We are also posting a copy of the service on our DeKalb First UMC YouTube channel by Tuesday each week: First UMC YouTube Channel

TO LISTEN ON THE RADIO: If you are not able to attend or watch online, tune into WLBK radio (1360AM, 98.5FM or www.wlbkradio.com) Sundays at 9 AM. This recording will also be available on our website (www.firstumc.net) under the “Worship” tab by Tuesday or Wednesday following each service.

Sunday School has resumed in-person classes each Sunday. For details contact the Director of Christian Education.

Miscellaneous Updates

Groups may resume in-person meetings with precautions: Our Church Building is once again open for group meetings, but groups must abide by the 50% room capacity limits. We still recommend online meetings with groups having high risk members. Some meetings can be offered in a hybrid format – with folks gathering both in-person and online via Zoom. Reservations for room use can be made by contacting the Church Administrator. Attendance sheets must be completed by group leaders and placed in the office mailbox.

Church Office is open Monday through Friday from 8 am until 3 pm. If weather and road conditions are treacherous, the office will not be occupied, (a notice will be put on our Facebook page) but emails will be monitored.

Lenten Study Join us for our worship and study series entitled, The Walk: Five Essential Practices of the Christian Life, based on a book by Rev. Adam Hamilton. We will reflect on each practice in worship each Sunday during Lent. Starting February 22, study classes will be offered each Monday at two times: 10AM and 7PM via Zoom (An in-person option may be available if restrictions allow). It’s not too late to join! A limited number of books are already available through the Church Office for $10. To register for the class click here or call or stop in the church office weekday mornings between 8 AM and 12 PM.

Our Bless DeKalb 2.0 initiative is an opportunity to take care of our neighbors struggling because of the COVID-19 crisis. We will combine our funds and partner with Love INC to help cover rental and utility assistance for families in the DeKalb area, and meet many other needs. Love INC has an established process for vetting the needs of those who seek assistance and making direct payments to vendors on behalf of the applicants. To participate just give online (https://giving.ncsservices.org/App/Giving/fumcdekalb) and choose “Bless DeKalb Missions” as the fund and “Love INC” as the sub-fund or mail a check with Bless DeKalb in the memo line. Please prayerfully consider this opportunity to Bless DeKalb families.

STAYING CONNECTED We continue to pray for each other and to reach out with phone calls and cards. The First UMC prayer chain ministry is still very active. If you have a prayer need, please contact Linda Buhr (buhrland@comcast.net) and she will pass the prayer request along to the prayer warriors
